TORONTO – The drive to Hamilton from Toronto might feel like forever, but in reality, it takes about 45 minutes – on a good traffic day! For the rich and famous, the journey can be as little as 14 minutes with the help of a private jet – just look at Drake! The Toronto rapper recently came under fire after it was revealed that his private jet has made several short trips from Toronto to Hamilton lately.
Despite being a short distance, the Twitter account “Celebrity Jets” calculated that the trip released approximately four tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and cost almost $3,000 USD in jet fuel.
To put that into context, the average person produces about four tons of CO2 a year and Drake produced that much in less than 15 minutes. Yikes. And people are not impressed.
“In light of me being 26 now, I have officially made as much of a carbon footprint over the span of my life as Drake does in a week with his private jet alone. But I’m supposed to use paper straws??” said one person on Twitter.
“Hey Drake, you’re pretty awesome & all, but damn… can you think about the future of our planet please? private jet to Hamilton? more carbon footprint for this than most in one year… not cool man, not cool. #climatechange” said another.
This comes after just last year, Drake announced a partnership with Aspiration Sustainable Impact Services that was supposed to help him lower his carbon emissions by auditing his schedule and travel.
But Drake is far from the only celebrity making these kinds of moves. Steven Spielberg, Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have all been named and shamed recently by the account.
Jenner recently came under fire for taking even shorter trips than Drizzy. The youngest of the Kardashian crew has been known to flaunt her riches, and recently even posted a photo on Instagram of her jet parked on the runway next to boyfriend Travis Scott’s with the caption “you wanna take mine or yours?”
Celebrity Jets has recently exposed Jenner for taking several short trips, including a three-minute flight within California this month.
Kylie Jenner’s Jet Took off from Camarillo, California, and was headed to Van Nuys, California – a journey that would have taken around 43 minutes by car but less than five minutes in the air.
Celebrity Jets also exposed Jenner on July 15th for taking a 12-minute flight!
People taking to social media to express their frustrations with having to make sacrifices for the environment themselves, while many celebrities continue to have obscenely large carbon footprints.
“Kim Kardashian’s private jet produced 61 tons of CO2 emissions. over the last week Drake’s private jet flights produced 182 tons of CO2 emissions. like what is even the point anymore?” said one Twitter user.
“I can’t believe we have to chug drinks through a compostable straw within 5 minutes to not swallow the paper from the straw itself so celebrities like Kylie Jenner can take 3 minute flights on their private jets,” wrote another
But others are defending wealthy people’s use of jets!
“Y’all acting like if you didn’t have a private jet you wouldn’t use it and why take a couple hour car ride when you can get there in 12 mins. Not to mention she is Kylie Jenner and has to be places and fast,” tweeted one user.
“Everybody says they would rather drive until they have the money to fly there in 5 minutes,” wrote another.
