Masai Ujiri Out as Raptors President in Shocking Shake-Up: Fans React to End of an Era

It’s the end of a legendary chapter in Toronto basketball history.

In a move that stunned fans across the country, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) announced Friday morning that Masai Ujiri is officially out as President and Vice-Chairman of the Toronto Raptors. The decision comes despite Ujiri still having a year left on his contract.

In a statement MLSE said “ During his 13 seasons with the Raptors, Masai has helped transform the organization on the court and has been an inspirational leader off it,”

“We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best. As we plan for the franchise’s future, and its return to the NBA Playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA Executive Search, will begin immediately.”

The news, broken by ESPN insider Shams Charania, has sparked strong reactions online and on the streets. So our Brandon Gonez Show team hit the streets to speak with fans directly.

“Honestly they needed to do something after getting rid of Pascal, I haven’t agreed with their young choice of draft picks.” one fan told us.

Another fan said “He gave us a championship and I’m really happy with what he did”

Masai Ujiri will forever be remembered as the president who helped deliver the first-ever NBA Championship to Toronto in 2019—a title run that captivated the entire country.
From trading with teams and gaining players to building a culture of grit, resilience, and global appeal, Masai turned the Raptors into more than just a basketball team. He made them Canada’s team.

He also went beyond the game.

Through his Giants of Africa foundation, Masai has been a fierce advocate for empowering youth across the continent, using basketball as a vehicle for change.
He championed diversity in sports, stood firm on social justice issues, and built bridges between communities both at home and abroad.

While some fans had a sense that this was coming, that doesn’t make it any easier. As the city tries to process the news, one thing is clear — Masai Ujiri’s impact is undeniable and his legacy in Toronto is forever cemented.
