Chef Andy Hay’s new show highlights Atlantic Canada’s diverse culinary scene

Andy Hay on The Brandon Gonez Show to talk about his new series on Food Network Canada.

Internet personality and Halifax local chef Andy Hay’s new Food Network show is putting Canada’s East Coast cuisine on the map.

Andy’s East Coast Kitchen Crawl follows his travels through Atlantic Canada exploring the region’s culinary creativity, from fine dining to home cooked meals from locals.

Hay told The Brandon Gonez Show about the culture of East Coast hospitality and how that is being displayed on the series.

“It really is trying to capture not only just like the high end food, but just, what is it that makes up Atlantic Canadian food,” Hay told Brandon Gonez. “And it is a surprisingly diverse area in different ways. There’s loads of different kinds of traditions, cultures, and we just dove deep into it and try to understand a little bit more.”

His passion for cooking started in his early 20’s after a trip to Southeast Asia with his wife and after returning home from Halifax, he was craving the cuisine that was not so popular in the area back in 2011. He found himself recreating the Thai and Vietnamese dishes by watching videos online.

Andy Hay is a chef, internet personality, and star of Andy’s East Coast Kitchen Crawl.

“The part of Instagram that I really like is just constantly getting out there, making new recipes, getting inspired. But I think what’s cool is, I built my brand using and kind of, like showcasing the East Coast, and it just takes it to a whole new level. Meeting the people, the landscape, more of those food traditional stories that make Atlantic Canada so awesome,” says Hay.

Hay was a runner up twice on season five and seven of MasterChef Canada and to one’s surprise, his goal was not to open up a restaurant.

“I want to be a poor man’s Anthony Bourdain. I want a food travel show, and that’s been the dream since day one, is that this is all I’ve ever wanted. So the fact that it’s happened is amazing. I’m very proud of what we built.”

Andy’s East Coast Kitchen Crawl premiered on April 10th and new episodes air on Fridays at 8 PM EST on Food Network Canada.
