A 19-year-old teenager named Kaleym Davy, according to his family, was shot and killed following an interaction in Mississauga on Aug. 6.
Davy’s aunt, Elles Moca is calling for change in police protocols and is highlighting the injustice her family feels.
Moca says her nephew allegedly got into an altercation with Toronto police and that he was shot and killed that night, but further details involving the incident weren’t given to the family.
“The police didn’t at all make any comments or statements to the family. The family was pretty much disregarded on scene and left in the dark on what exactly happened,” Elles Moca tells The Brandon Gonez Show.
Moca expresses the difficulty of not knowing the full story of what happened to their loved one and wishes they knew more.
She also voices that the police have allegedly not been telling the truth when it comes to a detail regarding the vehicle at the time of the incident.
“Toronto police, they said that Kaleym was in a stolen vehicle, and that turned out to be a lie,” she said.
In an updated statement regarding the vehicle provided by the SIU, “the Mercedes involved in the incident had not been reported stolen. Rather, Toronto Police Service officers had been tracking the vehicle in connection with a firearms investigation.”
Three unmarked police vehicles collided with the Mercedes which had four people inside at the time, according to the SIU.
An officer discharged their firearm into the vehicle, striking the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
“One subject official and six witness officials have been designated at this time. All six witness officers have been interviewed to date,” said the SIU in a statement to The Brandon Gonez Show.
Moca describes Davy as a “talented, social, ambitious, creative person” and he had dreams of pursuing carpentry after high school.
“He was enrolled in karate, swimming, basketball. He went to the States doing tournaments in the States. He was enrolled on the Toronto Elite team, and he actually went to the nationals in the States, and they won,” she said.
She also shared his passion for music and the support he had for her music career.
A protest for Davy took place on Sept.12th, hoping to bring awareness to his story, create awareness and to get answers.
“We feel like you know, we are the family. We should know what happened and how it happened and why it happened,” said Moca.
Moca looks forward to more protests taking place soon to help shine a positive light on her nephew.
“I believe that the community too should not be lied to, and should not be steered in a way to create a negative ambiance so that they are looking at Kaleym in a negative light and calling him a thief, because he is not a thief and he did not steal that car,” said Moca.
She also tells The Brandon Gonez Show that she appreciates the support she has received from people that care about Davy’s story and who are also demanding answers.
“We really do need a correction in protocols that are projected by the police. We really do need something to change, and you know this can happen to anybody’s kid,” she said. “We are all citizens here, and we are all humans. We’re not animals, and we deserve fairness and equality, and to have justice.”
Moca is voicing for the public to come together to make a change, in hopes that a situation like this does not happen again.
