Canadian athletes are on fire and 18 year old Victoria Mboko from the GTA is setting the standard high for what it means to be an athlete representing Canada.
In what some fans are already calling the “best tennis story of 2025,” 18-year-old Victoria Mboko took the National Bank Open title Thursday night in Montreal after a comeback victory over tennis superstar Naomi Osaka.
Entering the tournament as a wildcard, the Toronto native defied every odd, taking down four Grand Slam champions including Osaka in front of a roaring Canadian crowd. Her final performance was nothing short of sensational, overcoming a wrist injury and a one-set deficit to beat Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
When the final point landed, Mboko tossed her racket and collapsed to her knees, soaking in a moment that felt straight out of a movie.
Her historic win makes her become just the third Canadian woman to win the national title in the Open Era, joining Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019), and the first ever to do it in Montreal.
And now, the tennis world better take notice: Mboko’s ranking is set to skyrocket from No. 85 to No. 24, marking her debut as a seeded player heading into the U.S. Open later this month.
If this tournament was any indication — she’s just getting started and Canada will be rooting her at every step.
