TORONTO — Brandon sat down for a one-on-one with NDP leader Jagmeet Singh in the heat of the 2021 federal election to ask what his party is promising this time around. Some of their talking points include housing, vaccines, and student debt.
They also discussed what his promise to “tax the rich” really means. Singh said it’s not your average Joe that the NDP is looking at.
“. We’re going to make sure companies that hide their money in off-shore tax savings can’t do that anymore, we’re going to make sure the super wealthy pay their fair share for once, and we’ll invest that back into you and your family” Singh explained.
“We’re talking about the hundreds of people that were on the Panama Papers who were clearly evading taxes. We’re talking about web giants, companies that made record profits during the pandemic but pay virtually no taxes in Canada. We’re talking about people who have fortunates of over ten million dollars,” Singh told Brandon.
The NDP estimates that this approach would allow them to raise over $1.6 billion.
