Drink Water & Mind Her Business: 1-on-1 with Soca Superstar Patrice Roberts

1-on-1 with Soca Superstar Patrice Roberts

TORONTO — The queen of drinking water and minding her business stopped by The Brandon Gonez Show this week! Patrice Roberts gave us the inside scoop on her career, shared how she is breaking barriers, spilled a little tea on her personal life, and more!

She commands the stage with an energy that is unmatched, but Roberts shared that she does not consider herself an overconfident person.

“I wouldn’t say shy anymore, I used to be. But I’m very timid, [I keep] to myself” Roberts said, adding that she does not really let people in.

But she has a trick for overcoming this while performing.

“When I go onstage I have a front, an alter ego, that’s Patsy. That’s Patsy on stage,” she laughed.

She explained that Patsy was born from her own trials and tribulations when she was overcoming obstacles to success.

“I just woke up one day and said ‘I am that B, I am powerful, I can make a difference’, she explained, adding that before her performances she has a drink and speaks positive affirmations to bring Patsy to the front and center.

“It’s important that you self-motivate yourself because if you can’t do that, no one is going to do that for you if you can’t do it yourself.”

Roberts Always Wanted to Be a Star

Despite describing herself as timid, saying at one point she was shy, Roberts told The Brandon Gonez Show that she always wanted to be a singer. She shared memories of holding her mother’s brush in place of a microphone and performing for herself in the mirror.

“I just love to entertain. I love to be an inspiration, especially for females. We have it hard. I am living proof that you can go through so many things in life and just overcome them. I’ve been through trials and once you are able to overcome those obstacles and just push on, the sky is the limit.”

Roberts says that she struggled with various issues, like getting people’s attention with her music earlier in her career and being betrayed. Despite her trials, the soca superstar explained that she uses failure to fuel her.

“My mom, she’s always encouraged me to just dust yourself off, [because] in life there are always obstacles, there’s always failure. Without failure you can’t have success,” Roberts explained, adding that she has learned to be positive in the face of adversity.

As a powerhouse in the genre, Roberts shared that she’s happy to see soca music becoming more and more popular. She shared that Allison Hines is her favourite artist in the genre.

“Big up to all the female soca artists, especially the strong, independent ones who are really representing for soca music.”

While many would say that Roberts has already reached the pinnacle of success, she shared that she still feels she has many barriers to break, as this is only the beginning for her.
