Frustrated by not being able to find a job, a viral TikTok user decided to take matters into his own hands in a bold way.
A man from Hamilton, Ontario named Abood was determined to stand out in today’s competitive job market by wearing his resume on his T-shirt. The mechanical engineer said he was out of a job for four months and had no intention that his shirt would go viral.
His TikTok video amassed nearly a million views as of publication, explaining the creative idea of putting a QR code on the back that says, “Hire me,” and his resume on the front.
The Brandon Gonez Show contacted Abood to ask him about his unconventional approach to catch people’s attention.
“I got this idea while I was in the shower. I was like, ‘How can I stand out to companies?’ And I was literally thinking of different ways. I had so many ideas to stand out, and one of them, if people are not looking over my resume, let me just force them to look at my resume by walking around with a resume shirt.”
Abood said at first it was a TikTok joke, but he decided to eventually wear it out in public. He also said people were scanning the QR code and praising him for his cool idea.
“I think it was just a positive way to market myself,” Abood continued.
The engineer also said 66 people from different companies have contacted him since publishing his video to offer him potential work opportunities.
In a recent updated video, he shared the exciting announcement that he finally accepted a job after his difficult job hunt journey.
“After 400 applications, resume on my shirt. People reaching out to get me a job, half the world was involved in this, thanks to everyone, I finally have a friggin’ job,’” he continued.
We asked Abood what job opportunity he accepted but he said he was not able to disclose it due to confidentiality.
However, he expressed his gratitude and excitement on this next journey. In addition, he encourages other job seekers to not give up hope and emphasizes tailoring their resume towards a specific job opportunity.
