BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – A new park set to open in Brampton this month will be named after the Hindu holy scripture, Gita. After city council voted to approve the new name on August 26th, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown shared the news on Twitter.
“Gita Park is a testament to the @CityBrampton’s pride in our mosaic. We are a City that proudly celebrates our diversity of faiths & our belief in religious freedom,” Brown said in a tweet.
The mayor has told Parvasi Television that the park will be opening in late September, and will be located in the Mississauga Road and Embleton area. In a press release, the city specified that the park will be in the area administratively known as Troyers Park.
“We are very grateful for our Hindu community and this park is a symbol of that friendship,” Brown said in a release.
“I am very proud that this will be the first Gita Park outside of India,” he continued.
Brown said that so far the council has not run into any issues in the creation of the park, adding that they voted unanimously on the decision.
“The essence of Brampton is diversity and the essence of what people want for the future is that their city be governed and celebrated as a mosaic,” Brown continued.
The mayor said that city officials are now tasked with considering what amenities to include in the park. Some suggestions have reportedly included a cricket field, possible Garba celebrations, International Yoga Day activities and more!
