From TikTok to the international stage, fierce duo Flyana Boss is letting the world know they are worlds away from being one-hit wonders or industry plants.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably recognize the pair managed to shake up the TikTok sphere seemingly out of nowhere and have gone viral (many times) for their hit “You Wish,” accompanied by unique and colourful visuals of them running in the streets and other various places.

THE BEGINNING

What might surprise people is that the group, made up of Bobbi Lanea and Folayan, started in Los Angeles where both women were students at a music school.

Soon, the two would leave as classically trained musicians, best friends and an unstoppable duo.

The two women, hailing from Detroit and Dallas, sat down with Now Toronto ahead of their second show in Toronto on Sept. 22, where they opened up for the incomparable Janelle Monae.

“This is what we’ve been dreaming of our entire lives. Everyone told us the tour was gonna be hell but it’s not, we love it and we love performing,” Folayan shared.

Of the two, Bobbi has visited Toronto a handful of times when she was younger since downtown Detroit and downtown Windsor stand face-to-face with only a river separating the two.

However, this was Folayan’s first time seeing the city. The two said that when it comes to Toronto, the main thing that stands out is, of course, Drake.

They’ve also heard of poutine and hilariously refused to try it during their trip to the 6ix.

THE INSPIRATION

During the interview, the pair let us in on how they came about their unique name and the inspiration behind it.

“We were trying to do a play on someone’s name. Bobbi wakes up, she sees a poster of Diana Ross in her room and she says “Flyana Boss,” Folayan recalled.

Interestingly, the name can also be read as “Fly and a Boss.”

The two also chatted about their humble beginnings where they rented out a random music studio and had Bobbi’s cousin come in and engineer a handful of their songs.

However, it would later turn out that their track “You Wish,”, which was impressively recorded in a single session, would blow their stardom wide open.

The song hit number one on Spotify’s Daily Viral Chart in Canada, and received over 520 million views across social platforms where their song was sampled.

The song also hit number seven on TikTok’s U.S. Top Tracks.

“We knew when we recorded it that it would be successful. The energy around that song felt different,” Bobbi shared.

Still, they said they would have never anticipated just how well it would do and change the course of their lives.

THE RUNNING

Flyana Boss is best known for delivering their smash hit song with a dash of cardio.

The pair is famous for running in the streets for their videos and has garnered millions of views as a result.

They have sprinted through Disney WorldGoogle headquarters, Tik Tok headquarters, LA Fitness, and Costco, to name a few.

Folayan came up with the concept but hilariously shared that she did not anticipate the amount of energy it would take.

“I didn’t expect it either,” Bobbi said. “Up until then we were doing content and trying a bunch of different videos but once we saw this was working we realized we had to keep running.”

THE REMIX

Flyana Boss dropped a remix to their song in early September and the track has already garnered a quarter million views as of publication.

The song was quickly reminiscent of a clap back with both women pointing to haters and letting them know they aren’t phased by the internet trolling.

“We know all the chatter that’s going on online. We wanted to say, ‘What are we running from?’ and incorporate everything that’s been happening into the remix,” Folayan said.

The new version of the track also features Kaliii and rap icon Missy Elliott.

The two also interestingly shared that their dream collab is with T-Pain.

“T-Pain is who we want and [he] is who we are manifesting,” Bobbi said. “T-Pain is all we can think about.”

THE RULE

Bobbi and Folayan said that being in a duo means making sure they are in the right headspace in everything they do.

They make sure to get enough sleep and don’t stay out partying late either.

“We give each other a lot of  grace,” Folayan said. “We’re not forcing each other to do anything. We’re a duo, we’re a team.”

“From the very beginning we’ve always been respectful to each other’s boundaries. We’re not pushy friends, which I love so much,” Bobbi chimed in.
