With the recent release of season two, Brampton comedy duo Jae and Trey Richards continue to redefine Canadian television with The Office Movers. They promise the second season still has what fans loved about the first season, but brighter and with more stunts, fuller characters and exciting cameos.

The Richards brothers told The Brandon Gonez Show they were told about the renewal shortly after season one was released.

“It was a happy moment,” Jae said. I was just driving around, and then we got a text like, ‘hey guys, you available for a call in like, a few minutes?’”

Defying the Brampton driver stereotype, Jae pulled over in a TJ Maxx parking lot to take the call.

“They gave us the news, it was just amazing, man.”

When they relayed the news to their dad, who’s company they based the show on, he said ‘Yes! You still have a job,’ Jae laughed.

He is also proud they have accomplished something their dad wants to brag about.

“To his age and like his peers, it’s hard to say ‘Oh yeah, my sons do Youtube’… [So] for him to [now] say, ‘My sons are on TV’ and ‘You’re gonna know Jamaicans,’ You know calling people back home and [telling] them his sons are ‘big, big stars.’”

While their dad has not made them sign a contract for using his likeness (yet), Trey says the positive reception of The Office Movers reached their dad in “a different way.”

“People are now starting to hire him, and [when] he’s on the job they’re like, ‘Yo, you don’t know who this guy is. Like, yo. This is the office mover.’…so, that’s kind of cool to see it… full circle moment, man.”

Drake Reunion

OGs remember the iconic T-Dot Goon Scrap DVD sketch Jae and Trey made with Toronto-born legend, Drake. The brothers revealed that Drake is one of the cameos this season, reuniting them onscreen with the megastar.

Jae said he “had to lock in” for  Drake’s day on set, but was pleasantly surprised by how the rapper was equally invested in the project.

Jae recalls receiving a text from Drake’s manager saying, “Yo. Man, this guy’s practicing. This guy’s locked in. He’s ready to go.”

Jae says Drake was in his element on set and that he was happy they could facilitate his return to Canadian television.

Druski’s Coulda Fest in Toronto ‘Coulda Been’ better

Jae and Trey’s appearance at Druski’s Toronto date of his “Coulda Been Fest” was planned day-of, according to the brothers, but anyone at the show ‘coulda’ told you that.

“Druki messaged us out the blue, ‘What’s up guys, I’m in Toronto for a show. Need y’all there.’ Let’s do it. [The] side quest just popped up.”

While several attendees of Druski’s Toronto date faced criticism regarding the quality and chaos of the production, Jae and Trey said they admire Druski for taking on the feat of a live show and appreciated the opportunity.

On the other hand, “It is nice to get both sides,”  Trey said.

“Like, Druski is used to people saying ‘[this is] so good. This is so funny.’ So you do get to see the side of like… ‘I felt like I could have gotten more’. Then that’s for you to watch [and] take that back,” Trey explained.

Trey says getting real-time feedback is “the beauty of the internet.”

“Everything that we’ve ever done, even with Office Movers, we were able to put it out [and] see what people want to see more of. Our biggest [critique] was ‘love the show, but I would love if you guys got real Trinidadians– like a real Trini man.’”

Jae and Trey took this feedback and hired Trididadian comedian Junior Lee for the second season.

“You want a real Trini man, here you go now,” Trey said.

Community response

When asked about how it felt to receive support from their community, Jae said the positive outpour was “overwhelming,” and that the success of season one “literally felt like a win for everybody.”

“I think it’s a win for everyone, man,” Trey added. “Just because, you know, we have so many people turn on the TV and tune in to Crave and… they’re seeing someone from the cast that represents them, or a story that’s like, ‘oh yeah, that’s relatable.’”

Season three and beyond

Gonez points out the extra funds were well spent on grooming, complementing Jae’s braid up and Trae’s defined curls. But, hair isn’t where the budget upgrades stopped. Last time the Richards’ were on the BG Show, they said their main goal for season two was to blow up a car.

The brothers were happy to report that they blew up a vehicle in the first scene of the second season.

“That was fun. You got to set little things for yourself to just check off a box and say, ‘OK, if we get that second season, we’ll blow it up’. And then you get there, you blow it up, it feels bigger, because you earned it. You know what I mean?”

Jae and Trey are already planning how they will up the ante for future seasons.

For season three, Trey says “I’m blowing up a building bro.”

“A three-storey building at least,” adds Jae.

They also “would love some more Canadian comedy greats” like Seth Rogan to make cameo appearances.

“I love that man. I definitely see that there,”  Jae said.

All episodes of The Office Movers are available to stream on Crave.
