The Toronto Raptors are nearing a deal to re-sign Kawhi Leonard, former star player of the team back in 2019, when the team won their first NBA championship.
The Los Angeles Clippers chose to not hand a contract extension to Leonard and instead deal him to the Toronto Raptors, and in return to receive players Grady Dick and Brandon Ingram.
In addition to the players, the Clippers are set to acquire a pick swap, two future first-round draft picks, and two second-round draft picks.
The 35-year-old has one year remaining on his guaranteed contract that owes him $50.3 million.
The news comes as a great surprise to Canadians, with “Toronto’s Very Own”, Drake posting his excitement to his social media on Tuesday.
“So is it kawhiYZ szn again,” said Drake on his social media post.
Kawhi Leonard was a Toronto Raptor for one year in 2018-2019 season, and will always be remembered by Canadians for his iconic buzzer-beater in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Fans are elated at the news of his return being a possibility, already welcoming him back to the “6ix”.
“We need another chip so yes bring him back,” commented a user on The Brandon Gonez Show post.
Leonard has been named NBA Finals MVP twice, once in 2014 with the San Antonio Spurs and in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors.
