‘Timeless music is the goal,’ Mario reflects on his career and discusses what’s next

If you’ve had your heart broken, you definitely know his music. From tracks like “Let Me Love You” to “Just a Friend 2002,” Mario’s music is soothing and relatable, and perfect for when you’re in your feels. He’s back with a hot new track and stopped by The Brandon Gonez Show to discuss his career and share more about new projects.

Did you know that one of his most iconic music videos was shot right here in the Six?

“I shot the ‘Let Me Love You’ video right here in Toronto with Director X,” Mario shared, adding that he loves Toronto.

The classic track first hit our airwaves in 2004 and has been a soundtrack for many heartbroken lovers. While some of his greatest hits are over a decade old, he’s proud to have made such timeless music.

“It just reminds me that timeless music is the goal. It makes me feel so blessed to have worked with the people I’ve worked with creatively who have understood that as well,” he shared.

The R&B star told The Brandon Gonez Show that he has met fans at his shows who are in high school, meaning they were babies when songs like “Let Me Love You” came out.

“It also makes me feel like part of the culture in a way where even if I’m not motivated, I think about those types of things and it puts me in a space of gratitude. It keeps me motivated to continue doing what I do.”

The R&B star says that no matter what happens behind the scenes, he will continue to make music because the world needs it. And it’s obvious that Mario loves what he does.

“I get to tour and do cool sh*t like this without having number one records, and still sell out amphitheatres and do cool stuff.”

On the topic of cool stuff, Mario dished about his new track “Main One” with Lil Wayne featuring Tyga. He explained that the project came about unexpectedly, saying that he was working on a record in L.A. with Tyga when all the pieces fell into place.

“We got to this one track by Mike Crook and it just felt like summertime, it just felt like a vibe,” Mario explained, adding that people were dancing and laughing during the recording.

So, what’s his definition of the main one?

“For me, a main one is a girl who makes you feel like ‘damn, I’m ready to retire the idea of just being promiscuous and having multiple girls, or dating a lot’,” he explained.

“She just makes you feel like… man I’m ready to lock down and just focus on work and you.”

And he considers himself a lover for sure.

“I definitely have a few little toxic ways I’m working on, but I’m definitely a lover for sure.”

Mario shared the craziest things he’s been gifted by fans, why he loves being on tour, and more in this episode of The Brandon Gonez Show.
