Shocking posters advertising a ‘whites-only’ parents and children group have people on the internet enraged after they were first discovered in British Columbia this week.
“Are you looking for somewhere your children can play with others that look like them? Are they tired of being a minority in their schools or daycares?” reads the poster, which was reportedly posted in various locations in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
“Escape forced ‘diversity’ and join other proud parents of European children as we create an atmosphere in which our kids can feel like they belong. Invest in your child’s sense of well being and racial identity by giving them the gift of time spent amongst their own people – because they deserve it,” the bulletin continues.
According to a statement posted on the City of Port Coquitlam’s website, officials in the city were notified about the poster on Sept. 23.
“The City of Port Coquitlam condemns all symbols of hate. The City values being a welcoming and caring community for all persons,” the statement reads, adding that the city condemns these posters in the strongest terms, and works to promote an environment without hate.
“As soon as it was brought to our attention, Bylaw officers immediately searched the area and all bus stops in the surrounding area, to remove the posters but no signs were present. Perhaps, it was removed by someone else in the community,” Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West said in a statement.
“This vile garbage isn’t welcome in our community, or anywhere else. We strive and continue to work on building the bonds of our community and breaking down barriers, promoting all the diversity our city has.”
PEOPLE & POLICE REACT TO RACIST SIGN
The poster has been shared by various outlets online, with people sharing their reactions and anger in the comments.
“Lol they’re sick of seeing coloured people everywhere. Must be hard being racist… can’t go out the house without seeing our success. Good luck with that,” wrote one woman on Instagram.
“Imagine if it was the other way around…” posted another person.
“What in the Jim Crow is going on here!”
“For those who never believed that racism existed in Canada, here you go! In 2023, this white supremacist signage is proudly standing in public. It’s message is intentional, racist, and TIRED,” one mother posted. “BIPOC people of BC need to stand up TO THIS! In solidarity, we all need to have a voice in taking this piece of s**t down.”
According to the city, The Coquitlam RCMP has started collecting reports of hate-motivated incidents as a response to a rise in these events. Officials say they have seen hate-motivated incidents directed toward people experiencing discrimination for their race, gender or sexual orientation.
The Coquitlam RCMP is encouraging residents to report these posters if they see them around the city.
