Although the campaign trail for Toronto’s mayoral by-election has been heated at times, some of the leading candidates revealed which opponent they would choose to unwind and grab a drink with.
On Monday, The Brandon Gonez Show and Now Toronto hosted one of the final debates ahead of the mayoral by-election on June 26. Moderated by Brandon Gonez, participating candidates included city councillors Brad Bradford and Josh Matlow, former Scarborough MPP Mitzie Hunter, former Toronto Sun columnist Anthony Furey and policy analyst Chloe Brown. Both Olivia Chow and Ana Bailão were invited but did not RSVP, while Mark Saunders declined his invitation.

Towards the end of the debate, in true BG Show style, participants were asked which candidate they would like to grab a drink with, alcoholic or otherwise.
“Chloe I would love to have a drink with you and you know my favourite place in Scarborough is the Energy Shack, and I would personally have a brain booster which is filled with blueberries and lots of nice things,” Hunter said.
“I’ll return the favour to Mitzie because she picked me first. I would enjoy a Johnnie Walker Red with ginger ale, and my favourite bar right now is Ace Hotel. Really love a good rooftop patio to look out over Toronto Gotham,” Brown said.
“I’m going to pick Brad because I know he just lives right around the corner from me and he has two little kids as well,” Furey said.
“I don’t go out much and then I can be like, just come over to my messy house, because I’m going to assume his house is messy as well, I don’t know, and then we’ll be like OK we can just have a can of beer and accept the fact that we have like messy dad life.”
“I would like that and we are pretty close by [and] neighbours. But this is awkward because I was going to pick Chloe but you didn’t pick me,” Bradford laughed.
“If I had to pick one right now it would be Mitzie. I have a lot of respect for Mitzie and I have a lot of respect for many of the ideas that we share,” Matlow said, while Hunter teased that this response sounded like an endorsement of her.
