One woman got the shock of her life after she was informed that women need to sleep for 10 hours at minimum everyday.

Alexa Simpson (@Alexasimpson34) took to TikTok and shared that her whole life has been a lie after she was informed that women need more sleep than men and that the universal eight hours we’ve all been taught had nothing to do with women.

“They forgot to include women in the study. Us girls should be getting nine to ten [hours of sleep] at minimum,” she said in a video that has garnered three million views as of Wednesday evening.

“Who has time for that? But I’m gonna try my best now,” she continued.

The comment section lit up with women saying they always had a feeling the number of hours needed for optimal health was well beyond the recommended eight hours, adding that they only ever feel rested after nine hours of sleep, or more.

“I KNEW IT. I KNEW IT I KNEW IT. MY BODY ONLY FEELS RESTED WITH 9 HOURS OF SLEEP,” one user wrote.

“My insomnia watching this in distress,” someone else said.

Right now, there’s little research on how many hours of sleep women need compared to men.

And according to Statistics Canada, data shows that adults (of any sex) need seven to nine hours of sleep a day to be healthy.

But, according to the Sleep Foundation, women should get 11 extra minutes on average of sleep each night. Additionally, women are more likely to experience insomnia, anxiety, and depression that can result in sleep problems.

The study also shows that hormones can have an effect on sleep patterns and play a key role in how much sleep is needed.

Interestingly, the foundation says that studies have shown women fall asleep faster and spend more time in deep sleep, which suggests a greater need for it.
