Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board made an announcement in the deadly 2018 bus crash, but the accused driver’s lawyer isn’t giving up hope.
Over six years ago Jaskirat Sidhu was accused of crashing his truck into the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team’s bus in Saskatchewan, killing 16 people and injuring 13.
Sidhu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving offences and was sentenced to eight years in prison. However, last year he was granted full parole.
On Friday, an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing in Calgary for Sidhu made a decision to order a deportation back to India. He arrived in Canada from India in 2014.
His lawyer, Michael Greene, told the BBC that he plans to fight the deportation order.
Furthermore, according to CBC News, Greene said the decision was a foregone conclusion because Sidhu was not a Canadian citizen and he had committed a serious crime.
Greene added immigration officials would look at his client’s offence, his remorse and whether he is a security risk or a danger to the public.
Sidhu also has a wife and child, and their son was born in Canada. Greene said their son has severe heart and lung complications.
People online have reacted with mixed thoughts.
One user said, “It was also destroy the life of a young Canadian child who will lose his father if he is deported.”
Another user said, “This is wrong.”
Meanwhile, someone else said, “Canada needs to deport him ASAP to end this chapter and give relief to victims and their loved ones whose lives changed after horrific bus crash.”
Greene said Sidhu may not be deported for months or even years.
