An Ontario man has been accused of leaking sensitive corporate information that could harm Canada, according to the RCMP.

Earlier this month, former employee at Ontario Power Generation James Mousaly was arrested for allegedly dropping some top secret information and now faces a rare charge under the Security of Information Act, according to Global News.

According to court records, the alleged offence happened between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, 2024.

“Evidence indicates that the individual acted with intent to put critical infrastructure at risk. Immediately upon identifying the breach, the RCMP acted to remove access to the information…,” the RCMP said in a news release.

Additionally, the power plant company said, in a press release last week, that public safety had not been compromised despite the serious information breach.

“Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has been operating nuclear power plants safely for more than five decades. Our nuclear stations utilize sophisticated security technology and intelligence to keep our facilities and communities safe. This includes robust, “defense in depth” security systems to ensure we are prepared to pre-empt or respond to any situation,” the statement said.

“These systems worked: immediately upon identifying an information breach, OPG and RCMP implemented measures to mitigate and manage any further unauthorized disclosure. Public safety and station integrity have not been compromised.”

It also shared that authorities helped implement measures to stop any further unauthorized disclosure.

The 36-year-old was also charged under a section that prohibits communicating information the government has taken to safeguard a foreign entity or terrorist group.

Mousaly is scheduled to return to court for a bail hearing on Tuesday and could spend the rest of his life in prison if found guilty.

The RCMP said it is continuing to investigate and assess possible impacts of this alleged activity.
