A record number of Canadians have signed a petition calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call for a ceasefire in the middle east.

The e-petition was launched on Oct. 24 calling on the Canadian government to demand a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. It has since garnered more than 270,000 signatures at the time of publication.

This represents the most signatures on a petition since 2015, according to CBC News.

According to the House of Commons website, Ontario received the most signatures with nearly 135,000, Quebec came in second with over 47,100 and British Columbia at more than 42,200 signatures.

The petition was backed by Quebec NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice. Recently, Trudeau has come close to calling for a ceasefire without actually saying those exact words.

“We need to see a cease-, we need to see a humanitarian pause so we can flow, we need ceasing of the levels of violence that we’re seeing,” he said earlier this month.

People reacted to the clip on X, with one user (anatheblackcat) commenting,“ About to say ceasefire then proceeded to say ceasing. Haha we know what you want there. It’s crystal clear.”

Another user (BigMaqMD) commented, “Say it, say it “cease fire.”

The Brandon Gonez Show contacted the House of Commons asking about the next steps of the petition and they responded in part saying, “The petition closes its intake period for signatures on Thursday, November 23. The next step will be for the Clerk of petitions of the House of Commons to certify the petition, usually within 3 to 5 business days after its closing. Once the certificate has been issued to the Member of Parliament who has authorized the petition, the Member can present the petition in the House on any sitting day…,”Spokesperson from the House of Commons, Mathieu Gravel, said in an email statement on Monday.

The Trudeau government will have to address the petition within 45 days after it closes on Thursday. An official response will then be published on the petition’s webpage
