The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called to investigate the case that killed grandparents and their grandchild.

On Monday, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) confirmed in a post on X that police were called to a liquor store robbery in Clarington, Ontario. It was reported the suspect fled in a cargo van once authorities arrived, which initiated a pursuit.

According to a news release, the suspect proceeded to drive onto Highway 401 while travelling the wrong way by going westbound through the eastbound lanes.

As a result, a multi-vehicle collision occurred involving six vehicles. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene along with three individuals – a 60-year-old, a 55-year-old and an infant.

A dispatch call has been released of an Ontario Provincial Police officer expressing concern about the police chase on Highway 401 prior to the fatalities.

Premier Doug Ford commented on the incident on Tuesday at an unrelated event.

“It’s heart-wrenching, and you see everyone from a grandfather to a little baby killed because someone decides to rob a liquor store and go on the other side of the highway,” he said.

“It’s a tragedy. We’re going to do everything we can to equip our police, and one of the reasons we’re getting helicopters for police agencies around Ontario,” Ford added.

Questions have been raised about the incident and online users shared their reactions.

According to the SIU, five investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
